Flakes, Jugs, and Splitters: A Rock Climber's Guide to Geology by Sarah Garlick

*Update* Sarah’s book Flakes, Jugs, and Splitters won Best Book in the Mountain Exposition category at the 2009 Banff Mountain Film Festival!

Flakes, Jugs, and Splitters is A Rock Climber’s Guide to Geology by Sarah Garlick. This is a great book if you are a rock climber, geologist, or just interested in the processes that have shaped the Earth. As a geology major in my college days, it was great to refresh my knowledge of the different climbing areas I’ve visited. I’ll post a few of the photos that I have in the book below (along with Sarah’s text). You should go find this book at a local store or order from the Amazon link above.

Winter hiking on Mount Washington

Friday, January 16th, 2009

In mid December I joined writer Keith Mulvihill and climbing guide Paul Cail for a day trip up Mount Washington. This was for an article in the Travel>Escapes section of The New York Times. Although it was cold and windy, we lucked out with the weather and reached the summit under mostly clear skies. As a follow up the next day, we hiked the Lost Pond Trail at Pinkham Notch for a more low key look into winter hiking in New Hampshire. Here is a link to the article, audio slideshow, and some photos.

The NH Department of Travel and Tourism chose this rock climbing image for an advertisement promoting outdoor sports in the state. The ad will appear in the May 2008 issue of Outside Magazine (page 138/139) and the June/July issue of National Geographic Adventure. Thanks to Anne Skidmore and Janet Bergman for rising early to climb and shoot, the photo is of Anne climbing the last pitch of Recompense on Cathedral Ledge.

Friday, May 25th, 2007

If you’re walking by a book store or outdoor gear shop, check out the July 2007 issue of Rock and Ice magazine. Local climber and writer, Janet Bergman, wrote an article profiling 13 climbers in the North Conway, New Hampshire area. I have some photos on pages 50-52.
