Tux

Friday, October 2nd, 2009

Many areas of New England recorded their first snowfall in the past few days; so I thought a winter teaser photo from March 10, 2009 would be appropriate.

Meathead Films skiers Ben Leoni and Stacey Rachdorf heading up into Tuckerman Ravine on Mount Washington, New Hampshire. I have to comment that I was really impressed by the skiing of Ben and Stacey: very aggressive (but totally in control) descents including large drops over rocks and ice bulges. You can see footage in the latest release from Meathead Films: Wild Stallions. Another cool thing to check out is the partially filled in fracture line in the left end of the bowl; I believe the USFS Snow Rangers recorded the height at 8+ feet.

Photo Details: Canon 5D w/ EF 16-35mm L II USM lens, 1/800s at f/8 and ISO 100.

2003 Aurora Borealis

Aurora Borealis over Jackson and Mount Washington, New Hampshire

The Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) was very active in the Fall of 2003. I remember sleeping out on my deck one night and taking photos; the light was so bright you could see shadows on the ground. This photo was taken from a house in the Tyrol area of Jackson, New Hampshire. You’re looking out over the town of Jackson towards Mount Washington. Check out Space Weather for more Aurora information.

Photo Details: Some type of Nikon SLR and Fuji negative (800 ISO?) film.

Fall in the Alpine Zone

Friday, September 25th, 2009

Fall colors on the Alpine Garden Trail, September 24, 2009.

Alpine vegetation during Fall on the Alpine Garden Trail. Mount Washington, New Hampshire.

After staring at the computer for most of the morning yesterday I had to get outside for some exercise. The weather looked like it would hold on Mount Washington for the afternoon; so my route looked like this: Pinkham Notch (2pm)>Tuckerman Ravine Trail>Huntington Ravine Trail>Henderson Ridge (5.4)>Nelson Crag Trail>Alpine Garden Trail>Lion Head Trail>Tuckerman Ravine Trail>Pinkham Notch (5:40pm). I remembered the iPod Shuffle, but forgot a headlamp.

Photo Details: Panasonic Lumix LX3 (point and shoot). Exposure was 1/640s at f/4 and 400 ISO.
