On March 16, 2010 I skinned up Wildcat to photograph the east side of Mount Washington before the spring thaw came. While it wasn’t a perfectly clear sunrise, there was some nice dawn light and alpenglow. Here are two panoramics I created from photos taken that morning. They both show the main features of Mount Washington’s east side; from left to right are the Gulf of Slides, Tuckerman Ravine, and Huntington Ravine.

Pre Sunrise:

Photo Details: 5 individual photos merged in Photoshop, Canon 5D on tripod w/ EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS USM lens @ 90mm, 1/40s @ f/4 and ISO 200.

Many areas of New England recorded their first snowfall in the past few days; so I thought a winter teaser photo from March 10, 2009 would be appropriate.

Meathead Films skiers Ben Leoni and Stacey Rachdorf heading up into Tuckerman Ravine on Mount Washington, New Hampshire. I have to comment that I was really impressed by the skiing of Ben and Stacey: very aggressive (but totally in control) descents including large drops over rocks and ice bulges. You can see footage in the latest release from Meathead Films: Wild Stallions. Another cool thing to check out is the partially filled in fracture line in the left end of the bowl; I believe the USFS Snow Rangers recorded the height at 8+ feet.

Photo Details: Canon 5D w/ EF 16-35mm L II USM lens, 1/800s at f/8 and ISO 100.
